Jackie "Jack" L. McKown Obituary

Jackie L. McKown, 92, formerly of Tidioute, PA, passed away peacefully at the home of his son, Joel, on February 13, 2023.


He was born in Endeavor, PA on March 7, 1930, the son of the late Glenn “Hinie” and Louella Porter McKown and lived in Tidioute his entire life.


Jack attended Tidioute Area School. He went on to graduate from Barber School in Cleveland, OH. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served during the Korean War aboard the destroyer the USS N.K. Perry. He practiced his barbering skills at the McKown Barbershop in Tidioute. He was formerly employed at the National Forge where he worked in Heat Treat retiring after 38 years. He was a member of the Tidioute Presbyterian Church and gave freely of his time by mowing and maintaining the church property. He was a lifetime member of the Tidioute VFW Post 8803 and also a member of the American Legion Post #658 and the AMVETS Post# 50.


Jack enjoyed spending time with his four boys which he affectionately referred to as his four “SOB’s” …… Sons Of a Barber, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and his many, many friends. He also enjoyed many wonderful days canoeing on the Allegheny River with his wife, children, and special friends. He affectionately referred to these times as “D&D…Drinking & Drifting.”  He also enjoyed fishing with his buddies Toby Downey and Tom King, playing shuffleboard at Tippy, playing canasta, and archery. Jack liked to watch sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers. We will all miss his smile and his great sense of humor.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Benner McKown on March 25, 2009, an infant brother who died at birth, a brother, Brenton McKown and a sister, Mona McKown Wiles.


He is survived by his four sons, Jeffrey McKown and wife Terry of Warren, Joel McKown and wife Anita of Youngsville, Jay McKown and wife Annette of Tidioute and Jon McKown and wife Melony of Irvine.


Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.


The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the Darlings Home Healthcare nurses who took such good care of him.
