James R. Mendell, 86, of 230 Frank Street, Salamanca, New York, passed peacefully on Saturday, December 4, 2021 with his daughters by his side.
He was born August 31, 1935 in Red House New York, his childhood playground. He was a son of the late Ralph E and Elizabeth (Crocker) Mendell.
James was a graduate of Randolph Central. He was the catcher on his baseball team, played football, loved swimming and was an accomplished competitive ski jumper. He was a master craftsman, avid wood worker and carpenter extraordinaire. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, horseshoes, hunting and just spending time outdoors.
His military service was with the US Army beginning in 1958 and was stationed in Darmstadt Germany. After which he became a member of the laborer’s union.
James is one of seven siblings and is survived by his sister, Joanne (Donald) Dulanski.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Harriet L. (Raines) Mendell and infant daughter Louise.
Surviving are his children; James Allen of Cassadaga NY, Joyce Ann (Paul) Nelsen of Falconer NY, Judith Amy of Ohio, Janice Alane (James Smith) of Great Valley NY, Jerri Arlene (Steve Alvarez) of Canada and Julie Anne (Dennis) Ewing of Texas, 7 Grandchildren: William Yaworsky of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mikaylynn (Colton) Gotshall of Raleigh, NC, Garret Tinnerman of Salamanca NY, Abbie Nelsen of Buffalo NY, Halle Nelsen of Falconer NY, Kyle Ebeling of Texas and Blake Ebeling of Texas and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no services at this time. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date by his immediate family.
