John McCanna Obituary

John L. McCanna 83, of Youngsville, PA passed away at the Rouse Home on April 13th, 2023.

He was born on April 29, 1939 in Corry, PA to John H. and Kathleen (Woods) McCanna. A 1958 graduate of Youngsville High School, he worked at National Fuel Gas Distribution Center of Warren in many positions for 37 years, retiring as company clerk in 1997. He was president of the Firemen and Oilers Union-Business Agent SEIU Local #22 where even after retirement he worked as their lead contract negotiator for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Brokenstraw Fish and Game Club, Chairmen of the Youngsville Rec Commission (Spending many years helping with improvements of the Brokenstraw Valley Swimming Pool), Youngsville Borough Auditor, NFG Credit Union Board and a member of St Luke Roman Catholic Church.

John is Survived by his loving wife of 63 years Rose Marie (Fill) McCanna of Youngsville, his children: John W. (Lauri) McCanna Youngsville, Susan Scavone of Orlando, FL, Robert (Heather) McCanna of Fort Smith, AR, Grand Children: Jordan Kaye McCanna Nashville, TN, Katelin Scavone (Partner Bryan Westfall) Lakeland, FL, Nicholas (Kathryn) Scavone San Fransisco, CA, Gabriel Scavone Arlington, VA and Dominic Scavone Orlando, FL, a Brother Raymond (Norma) McCanna of Pittsfield and a  Sister-In-law Ann Schumacher of Youngsville.

In addition to family, John loved Trap Shooting, Hunting and Basketball (Huge Duke Fan). He was one of the longest standing members in the Warren County trap league. One of his accomplishments was winning the Pennsylvania State Trapshooting Handicap Championship in 1985. He also offered his talents as a coach for many years in the Youngsville High school Boys and Girls Basketball programs.  Whether it be shooting or basketball, he enjoyed teaching skills to others of all ages for their betterment.

A memorial Mass of Christian burial will be Celebrated on Thursday at 11AM at St. Luke’s R.C. Church 420 North Main St. in Youngsville with the Rev. Fr. Richard Tomasone, pastor, serving as celebrant.  Visitation will be held for an hour before in the gathering space there. Burial will follow in the Youngsville Cemetery.

In lieu of Flowers the family would request that Memorial donations be made to the Youngsville Fire Department 29, Fireman Dr. Youngsville, PA 16371, or a charity of their choice.
