Upon graduation of high school, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August of 1967. He was stationed in Vietnam where he was wounded granting him presentation of the Purple Heart. Through the Navy he learned basic seamanship, survival and most importantly discipline which he carried on throughout the years in all the days of his life.  After serving in Vietnam he was stationed aboard the USS Sylvania AFS2 ported in Norfolk Virginia until his discharge in 1971. Between 1971 and 1977 he worked for the Atlantic Electric Company as a power plant operator, and immediately after his employment with the company, re-enlisted into the U.S. Navy until his retirement in 1994.

As he said, “She is my rock and she is what keeps me going.” From 2006-2019 his words were, “It has definitely not been a complete honeymoon but as I look at it, if you are at the top of anything you have nothing to work for.”

Services for William will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Wrightsville Cemetery with full military honors. Condolences to the family may be made at www.nelsonfuneralhome.net.

Debbie Nelson’s message:  I would like to share a special message that I feel that may help others in their times of sorrow as it is what gets us through one day at a time. As Bill was forever saying to me, “Don’t question why you run into stumbling blocks because when it’s over you are where God intended you to be.”

No more a watch to stand, Old Sailor
For you are drifting on an ebbing tide
Eight Bells has rung. Dog Watch is done
A new Berth awaits for you on the other side.

Your Ship is anchored in God’s Harbor
And though his sailors are of equal rank,
there’ll be Shipmates on the deck to greet you
And Pipe, as you ascend the Plank..

Her boilers with full steam ahead
Cargo stowed and Galley stored,
Just waiting to get underway,
When the last hand comes aboard.

Look sharp! That Hand is you, Old Sailor.
And you’ll be sailing out on Heavenly Seas,
So may the wind be ever at your back,
Fair weather, and God speed.

Dad, I can’t believe that this day has come. I can’t begin to tell you how heartbroken I am. I know that you are in a better place and your suffering is no longer. You fought the good fight soldier. I am proud that I was given the privilege to call you my father. I know that you will be the angel who watches over us. We will miss you terribly but we will be ok. Sleep well Angel. I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!
